DESCRIPTION:
June marks the commemoration of the student uprisings that o
ccurred in various parts of Gauteng\, with young people taking a stand for
their voices to be heard in their fight for freedom of expression and man
y other civil rights. This significant month lends itself as a key time to
give back young people their place in history through various educational
and public programmes designed to promote a museum-going culture but most
importantly\, to give young people the power to re-write their own narrat
ives and to re-claim and re-imagine their own heritage at a time where cul
ture is dynamic and constantly changing.

Aluta Nova Festiva
l of Museums is thus earmarked as one of the City’s signature programmes
curated to offer the youth an opportunity to learn about and explore hist
ory\, heritage and culture through a contemporary and decolonial lens. The
festival will offer a variety of activities such as the iconic London Bus
museum tours\, food/craft markets and live music showcases by young and u
pcoming artists. The programme will offer guests the opportunity to explor
e different activities throughout the week\, culminating in live music per
formances – which will further contribute in supporting local talent and
creative SMMEs. While this programme is focused at promoting the James Ha
ll Museum of Transport\, in future years\, this festive commemoration of h
eritage will see different museums of the City presenting curated and uniq
ue experiences and offerings.
