Support transformational education for learners in inner-city Johannesburg (especially during COVID)
Sketch With Streetlight is a series of online classes that are a collaboration between Streetlight Schools and three esteemed South African artists. They are a way to engage with art for adults (16+) and for families with children through the unique lens of each artist and to disconnect from the challenging times we live in.
Session 3 features Fiona Pole who specialises in printmaking & has had numerous exhibitions in South Africa & abroad. She earned a BA Honours in Fine Arts at Rhodes & graduated from L'Ecole Superieure Estienne with a mention of excellence. She was awarded a scholarship by the City of Paris to work in 2 historic printing studios. She returned to South Africa in 2012.
We will be making a sound thaumatrope. A thaumatrope is an optical toy which was popular in the 19th century. The first thaumatrope was invented by an English doctor who used it to demonstrate a theory he called 'the persistence of vision'. In this workshop we will be creating disks with a picture on each side. When the disk is twirled quickly the two pictures appear to blend into one. We will be adding smaller disks with string 'arms' which make a sound when the stick is rotated.
