Support transformational education for learners in inner-city Johannesburg (especially during COVID)
Sketch With Streetlight is a series of online classes that are a collaboration between Streetlight Schools and esteemed South African artists. They are a way to engage with art for adults (16+) and for families with children through the unique lens of each artist and to disconnect from the challenging times we live in.
Session 2 features Chloë Reid and Io Makandal, who are both artists based in Johannesburg, South Africa. In an effort to create community, over the past year Makandal and Chloë have been facilitating a group of people who meet once a month to collage. The experience provides an unpressured space to focus the mind away from their respective practices and connect with a revolving cast of makers in the city. The process is not demanding or necessarily time-consuming and makes use of existing materials and debris.
As a make-do medium, collage is well suited to staying put. In this class, Makandal and Chloë will briefly discuss the notable history of collage, bringing in the work of several contemporary artists who make use of the medium before guiding the class through their own collage making. The aim will be to share some collage making principles and create at least one collage during the class.
