To Be a Bonsai
28 August 2022
From 10-1pm
Bonsai 'tray planting', is the Japanese art of growing and training miniature trees in pots, developed from the traditional Chinese art form of penjing
Bonsai trees represent harmony in nature - contained. The art of growing certain trees and shrubs, of many varieties, in small, shallow containers. Through careful and precise training and pruning, the plant is slowly shaped and manipulated to give the appearance of an older, mature tree.
“The object is not to make the tree look like a bonsai, but to make the bonsai look like a tree.” John Naka
This workshop set in The Cradle of Humankind is designed for those who appreciate the understated beauty and unique form. Take home your own precious bonsai and learn about the art of this delicate practice.
The day unfolds over 3 hours and will cover the basic techniques of pruning, wiring, branch selection and repotting. Stay on for lunch at The Shed after the workshop, or stay the night before/ after the workshop.
Full-day ticket (including tree, bonsai pot and all materials required): R950pp
A word from our facilitator: Clive Vickers
“As a young boy, I was always fascinated by trees and felt drawn to nature. As I grew older, I craved a connection with trees and felt the urge to put my green fingers to work. The art of Bonsai was a perfect fit for me as I lived in small apartments.
I remember receiving my first Bonsai as a gift; sadly, it died. This sparked my determination to learn more about the art of Bonsai. Through my practice, I gained valuable insights into the joy of working with and looking after Bonsai. It offers you time to reflect on your day as you water them and care for them. It teaches you patience and allows you to live in the now, which is the most incredible feeling.
After many years of gaining more knowledge, I have finally opened up a tiny nursery in Linden, Johannesburg, where I can share my love and passion with other Bonsai lovers.”
